In order to keep your equipment functioning efficiently and effectively it needs to be maintained.  You can help by changing your air filter on a monthly basis.  A large percentage of residential units that malfunction are do to neglect.  Keeping the filter new on a monthly basis will help the air flow of your system, reduce unwanted particles from slipping through your air duct system, and increase the life of your system.  Also if you own a gas furnace it is highly recommended to have it serviced atleast once a year before you use it to make sure that it is functioning properly. 

In many cases equipment just needs a tune up so to speak.  Over the years things tend to get dirty and they do not function as they were designed to.  This can cause parts to overheat, ice up or just simply break.  If it is possible to repair these parts and the system will work efficiently afterwords this will most likely be the best option.
